The Newton Modem Card is one of two modems Apple produced for the Newton MessagePad series of PDAs. The other being the Newton Fax Modem.
Unlike the Newton Fax Modem, the Newton Modem Card is a Type II PCMCIA card powered by the MessagePad and not an external box powered by batteries. Both modems share the same functionality and 2400 bits per second data and 9600 bps fax communication speeds. The card uses the common XJACK connector, which is still used today and has no indicators or controls of any kind.
The card version of the two modems is quite rare in comparison to the external version (although not rare enough to be valuable). I very much prefer this version to the external modem as the extremely short serial cable of the external version requires you to have the Newton MessagePad placed on a flat surface or deal with something the size of a deck of cards banging about. However, since Newton OS has a great deal of support for PCMCIA modems I prefer a 33.6 kbps modem or higher (although 56k modems are overkill for a Newton device in most cases).
This card seems to function perfectly in a Macintosh PowerBook running Mac OS 10.4.10. However, it is too slow to be of any practical use.
